Ethiopian Jews have petitioned the Israeli High Court to make the government uphold its promise not to cut back on the number of migrants from the country allowed into Israel each year.
The court application comes after Ethiopian Jews protested against discrimination from local community members refusing to sell or rent property to them because of their skin colour.
Back in 2010, the Israeli government committed to bringing nearly 8,000 Ethiopian Jews to Israel within the next three years.
But the government recently backtracked, reducing the quota of Ethiopians allowed into the country by nearly 100 people each month.
Lack of space was cited as the prime reason for slowing the rate of aliya, but now the State Attorney’s Office says that deeper problems of integration and successful absorption are the issue.
For Jews in Ethiopia, their temporary pre-aliya status makes it difficult for them to find stable work, and until they actually immigrate, they receive little financial support from Israel.
Israel’s High Court has said it will respond to the petition in March; until then, Jews in limbo in Ethiopia can do little more than wait.
